Walter Newall, circa 1810-20. 2-storey attic and basement classical house
with lower 2-storey L-plan wing to SE added, mid 19th-century.
MAIN HOUSE: pinned squared rubble with polished red sandstone
dressings and angle margins. Symmetrical 3-bay elevation with
steps to Roman-Doric engaged column porch; round-arched
doorway with fanlight; double-leaf panelled doors. Sash and
case windows with 12-pane glazing pattern. Moulded eaves
cornice.
W flank windows similarly detailed. Rear elevation with
projecting full-height semi-circular stair-turret with roof
light. Hipped slate roofs, tall wallhead stacks to E and N
with octagonal cans.
L-PLAN WING: rubble with sandstone margins. S elevation 3-bay
with simple central doorway. Single light plate glass sashes.
Dormers to 1st with broken pediments. E elevation similarly
detailed. Further single storey extension to rear. Slate
roofs throughout.
INTERIOR: plain cornice detail, tripartite plan with
cantilevered toplit stair, simple timber balusters. Mostly
panelled timber doors with typical doorcases.
Latterly serving as an independent school run on liberal principles founded by John Aitkenhead, subsequently acquired (2002) by the Kinokuni Children's Village for education along similar lines. Kilquhanity is a good example of a mid-career villa by Newall.
