Description

Designed by William Keir, Junior, of Buccleuch Estates; cast
in Workington, and erected Autumn 1813. Ornamental cast-iron
footbridge. Single segmental arch over River Esk.
Arch formed by lattice girders, shallow spandrels at either
end; bull-faced ashlar abutments with angled springers. Parapets
have simple balusters and are splayed at approaches.

Statement of Interest

Built for the Duke of Buccleuch within his grounds at Langholm

Lodge.

Probably the earliest existing iron bridge in Scotland.

Upgraded B to A 12.7.88.
