Description

Earlier 19th century. 2-storey, 3-bay rectangular-plan public house. Rendered to S, E and N; painted rubble to W; painted stone cills, margins, straight quoins, base course, string course and eaves course. Scrolled skewputts.

S (PRINCIPAL) ELEVATION: central door with later timber and slated canopy; flanking single windows; timber fascia pub signage above 'HILLEND TAVERN'. 3 1st floor windows above ground floor openings.

E ELEVATION: adjoins 41 Main Street.

N (REAR) ELEVATION: almost completely obscured by modern additions.

W ELEVATION: adjoins 35 Main Street.

Plate glass in timber sash and case windows with horns to principal elevation. Cast-iron rooflights to S; modern dormer windows to N. Pitched roof; slates to S; concrete tiles to N (rear); raised flat-headed skews; scrolled skewputts with floral detail to N; coped rendered gable apex stacks; circular clay cans.

INTERIOR: no original interiors remaining.

Statement of Interest

This building is one of the few 2-storey houses in the former linen-weaving village of Hillend. Modern accommodation has been incorporated into the rear.
