Description

Circa 1900. Virtually mirrored pair of 2-storey and attic, 2-bay houses (grouped 1-2-1). W elevation painted render; N and S elevations painted brick. Painted dressings. Rusticated quoins. Billetted eaves course. Architraved margins, lugged at 1st floor. Bracketted cills.

W (STAIR STREET) ELEVATION: doorpieces in centre bays (No 36 to right), with pilastered doorways, and joint linking frieze, cornice and locking course; fanlit doors. Window, with bracketted cornice, in bay to right at ground floor. Canted window, with half-piend roof, in bay to left at ground floor. Window to each bay at 1st floor. Canted and piended dormer windows above outer bays.

N ELEVATION: gabled and blank.

S ELEVATION:

4-pane glazing in sash and case windows; modern glazing in window to right at ground floor (No 36). Painted coped skews. Painted brick gablehead stacks. Grey slates. Octagonal cans. Cast-iron rainwater goods, including corniced eaves guttering.

RAILINGS, GATES AND GATEPIERS: very low coped wall to W, surmounted by decorative cast-iron railings. Square pyramidal-capped gatepiers; similarly detailed gates to central gateways.

Statement of Interest

Nos 36 and 38 Stair Street are not marked on the OS Map of 1894, but are marked on the OS Map of 1906.
