Description

Probably circa 1810. Single storey, 3-bay lodge adjoining
tall arched gateway; cottage raised 2nd half of 19th century
with attic storey added. Rubble-built, with ashlar
dressings, hood-moulds, and roll-moulded pointed-arched
openings. Lodge: door central on east elevation, crow-stepped
gables each have 2 ground floor and single gable-head window.
Diagonal glazing pattern; corniced end stacks; slate roof;
rear outshot. Gateway: tall main gate with lion mask
keystone, small pedestrian gate beside lodge; wall stepped
down at east with carved animal heads and linked with main
policies wall. Iron gates resemble yetts.

Statement of Interest

Gates are said to be from old Dumfries jail which was

erected circa 1579 & demolished circa 1802; since the stone-

work of most of the ground floor openings appears to be

re-used these might conceivably be from the same source.
