Description

Late 17th century, erected at this site 1774. Square-section ashlar gatepiers with rusticated long and short-work quoins; 'book rest' caps with cornice and carved orb finials; buttressed to rear (N) elevation. Ashlar-coped, lean-to flanking walls.

Statement of Interest

Property of Strathmore Estates (Holding) Ltd. When, in 1774, the court walls close to the castle were demolished this (the Outer Gate) and the De'il and Gladiator Gates were relocated to the policy perimeters. At the SE perimeter, this gate became known as Church Lodge.
