Description

17th century. Grey sandstone ashlar obelisk sundial comprising square-plan pedestal; circular base; square shaft divided on each facet to form 5 compartments; octagonal capital with sloping facets above and below linking shaft and tapering finial; regularly disposed metal gnomons. Inscribed sun motifs set in pedestal facets; heart-shaped, triangular, cut-shaped and circular sinkings set in shaft compartments; reclining and proclining dials above and below capital.

Statement of Interest

An interesting and unusual example of the obelisk-style sundial (compare with those at Barnton House, Edinburgh, Barnbougle Castle, Linlithgowshire, Kelburn and Drummond Castles - see illustrations, MacGibbon & Ross). With both shaft and tapering finial measuring 3ft10' and the capital measuring 1ft10', Mount Stuart's dial is 11ft4' high. Originally situated at NS 1089 5903, the sundial was erected in its present position following repairs circa 1960.
