It is among a relatively small number of buildings with a surviving thatched roof found across Scotland. A Survey of Thatched Buildings in Scotland, published in 2016 by the Society for the Protection of Ancient Buildings (SPAB), found there were only around 200 buildings of this type remaining, most of which are found in small rural communities. The use of thatch saw a revival from the late 19th century as part of the Arts and Crafts movement, particularly in central, eastern and southern areas of mainland Scotland. As it was primarily used for decorative purposes, the Arts and Crafts style did not attempt to recreate local thatched building traditions in either form or scale and was instead modelled on the English traditions of thatching.
