Description

Late 18th to early 19th century, altered to front and rear. 2-storey, 5-bay (bays grouped 2-3) coaching inn, now hotel, with stone gablets and single storey, 6-bay wing. Harled with stone margins and quoin strips. Some stop-chamfered arrises.

S (ENTRANCE) ELEVATION: gabled porch with boarded timber door and narrow lights to each return in bay to right of centre at ground, windows in flanking bays (that to left later bipartite), and 2 windows to outer left; 1st floor with 3 regularly disposed windows each breaking eaves into gablet dormerhead, small window close to eaves between bays 3 and 5, and plaque (see Notes) between bays 2 and 3. Slightly advanced piend-roofed single storey bays to outer left with boarded timber door to left, windows in flanking bays, further door with adjacent window to left at outer right and lower bay to outer left with broad sliding timber door.

E ELEVATION: gabled bays to outer left with 2 windows to ground, single window to right at 1st floor and signboard to left. Slightly set-back later bays to right with 3 windows to ground and 2 windows breaking eaves into dormerheads at 1st floor.

W ELEVATION: blank piended bay with door in link wall at outer left.

N ELEVATION: variety of elements to rear elevation including blank gabled bay to left and single storey gable to right.

4- and 6-pane glazing patterns in timber sash and case windows. Dark grey slates, fishscale bands to porch. Coped harled stacks with cans. Plain bargeboarding. Cast-iron downpipes with decorative rainwater hopper.

BOUNDARY WALLS AND GATES: rubble boundary walls with decorative ironwork gates.

Statement of Interest

Plaque reads "At this inn, in the autumn of 1830 Sir Walter Scott and the Ettrick Shepherd met and parted for the last time".
