Description

Circa 1600. S facing lectern dovecot. Rubble, ashlar
dressings. Centre door in S elevation with chamfered margins
and small barred (now shuttered) window above. Square vent
with stone grill high in W gable; lower rat course missing
but upper returns around building, stepped up at NE angle
and again at SW to return about squat angle buttress
platform. Small set 4 flightholes under swept dormer; local
stone slate roof.
INTERIOR: 5:: stone nesting boxes line walls.

Statement of Interest

Dovecot sited close to Burgie Tower, 1602, now surrounded by

circa 1802 walled garden wall, which has been shaped to

exclude the cote. The angle platform at the SW is unusual

and its use not known; possibly as a stand for a water

receptacle or merely as an alighting ledge.
