Description

Dated 1788. Courtyard plan; substantial stables/steading

range; single storey and single storey and loft. Rubble

and harl pointed rubble, tooled granite dressings.

N facing single storey and loft, 7-bay elevation (facing

mansion) with centre basket-arched entrance under gable

with keystone oculus and dated bellcote. Basket-arched

carriage houses in outer bays; 2 later wide square-headed

doorways at left and pedestrian entrance flanked by

segmental-headed windows at right. 6 loft windows.

W facing 7-bay elevation with gabled centre bay with wide segmental-headed entrance closed by plank doors flanked

by similar square-headed openings. Slightly advanced

gable at left and projecting gabled wing right.

Ball finialled apices ('pineapple' finial at SW gable);

slate roofs.

Some modern alterations and additions at rear.

Statement of Interest

Bellcote dated 1788 and initialled AD for Major Alexander

Duff who purchased Mayen 1785-88 and built both mansion

and stable range, relegating the old house as the Mains

of Mayen.

Modern silo tower at rear of steading not included in

listing.
