Description

Circa 1830, renovated 1980s. Fine 2 storey, H-plan, stable block sited to N of Inverernan House, incorporating iron-columned verandah between advanced gabled wings and low pitched broad eaved roof. Harl over snecked rubble with ashlar margins. Granite base course and quoin strips. Segmental cart arches and round headed windows. Boarded timber doors and 2-part fanlights.

FURTHER DESCRIPTION: principal elevation to W with advanced outer wings, that to left with cart arch at ground, both with decoratively-astragalled round headed window at 1st floor and blind tablet in gablehead. Recessed bays with full-width verandah.

Largely 12-pane glazing pattern in timber sash and case windows; some out-of-character 1st floor windows with plate glass glazing. Grey slates. Deeply overhanging eaves with plain bargeboarding..

INTERIOR: some interior detail retained, including looseboxes boarded timber walls, finialled posts and ironwork hay baskets.

Statement of Interest

Formerly listed as 'Offices North of House'. Group with Inverernan House, Dovecot Cottage, Ice House, Gates and Walled Garden. During renovation work in the 1980s, part of the stable block was converted for business use. The well-designed stable and coach house range would have been part of the general improvements carried out in the 1830s when Inverernan House was remodelled to include a classical façade, and a court of offices and icehouse were added to the NW. The walled garden sited to the SW probably also dates from this period.
