Description

Dated 1742 at skewputts. 2-storey T-plan main house
5-window ashlar granite front, transom at door for fanlight,
openings chamfered; 1st floor taller than ground. Back
rubble with cherry cocking, 2 swept dormers.
Marked bell-cast to roof chimneys have ogee copes. Interior:
granite stair to half landing, wood above; 1st floor rooms
panelled. Outbuilding:- single-storey, probably earlier in
date. Large arched hearth with ingle seats. Choose press.
Large walled garden attached.

Statement of Interest

An important and very complete example of a mid 18th

century small mansion house.

Residence of Charles Mackay of Shiels (+ 1794) who

commanded a merchant ship in the West India Trade from the

Port of London. See tombstone in Midmar churchyard
