Archibald Simpson and William Ramage (?) 1847-50, in present form, large Scottish baronial mansion of 3/4 storeys in fall of ground remodelling of work of much earlier date. N. part originally a tower house (14th century?) with 3 vaults, entering at 1st; remodelled 1680 vaults gutted out and centre part added, both rubble-built. South wing added 1745 or earlier, ashlar. 1847-50:- S. wing extended, single-storey entrance hall and c inserted in court, old courtyard gate moved N, S. loggia and terrace added and fenestration remodelled throughout. Terrace has 2 dolphin fountains, sculptures of boar shepherd and dog, fine table sundial by J. Williamson Aberdeen 1736 and 2 flower pedestals (Coade
stone?) consisting of 3 caryatids of late 18th century pattern.
"Jean Burnett (ob. 1688) built the middle part of the house of Skene in her widowhood and put a new roof on the old tower. This is writt by her grandchild George Skene of that ilk at Skene the 7th of July 1745. The above built by Jean Burnett is the main cr middle part, the South wing was built by her said grandchild. The old tower makes the north wing
... she floored and roofed the old tower after taking out the vaults ... the family having always lived before that in low thatch houses".
