16th century in origin, substantially rebuilt in 1790 and later. L-plan pier and quay, rubble built with modern cement infil and coping to seaward edge. Landward section has inset mill stones from Bysbies Mill, seaward portion has cast-iron capstans at intervals.
The NSA describes the 1790 rebuild as owing to the "assistance of the Convention of Royal Burghs", and refers to a healthy trade with Whitehaven and other English ports. Dick cites Pococke writing in 1760 referring to trade with Sweden.
