Description

Late 19th to early 20th century. Pair of estate cottages; 8-bay, single storey, with single storey and attic terminal bays. Squared and snecked whinstone rubble. Bull-faced granite quoins, lintels, cills and rybats. Deep overhanging eaves to S, W and E. S (PRINCIPAL) ELEVATION: gabled outer bays advanced, with 3-light window at ground floor and 2-light window in gablehead. Door in penultimate bays to left and right; boarded doors, door to right with leaded glazing in upper panel. Cat-slide open porches in re-entrant angles, formed by continuation of roof pitch of outer bays and supported on timber pier. 2-light window in remaining bays at centre.

E ELEVATION: cat-slide porch advanced to right of centre, formed by continuation of roof pitch; door to S return and window to E. 2-light window to left. Modern low rubble garden wall adjoined to left and to left of porch.

W ELEVATION: cat-slide porch advanced to left of centre, formed by continuation of roof pitch; door to S return and window to W. 2-light window to right.

N ELEVATION: 8-bay. Gabled outer bays, with 3 windows at ground floor and 2 windows in gablehead. Door in 3rd bay from right. Regular fenestration in remaining bays.

Mainly 2-light windows, each light with 9-pane upper panel and 4-pane lower panel; 6-pane sash and case windows to N elevation.

3 evenly-spaced banded ridge stacks. Purple-grey slates.

Statement of Interest

These cottages were presumably estate cottages for Craigenveoch Castle, which was built by Sir John Dalrymple-Hay in circa 1876. Craigenveoch Castle was demolished in circa 1952.
