Description

Robert Adam, circa 1790. Classical mausoleum. Square-plan and domed. Lightly droved grey ashlar with polished dressings, roof and ball-finialed dome leaded.

S elevation: pediment over central doorway is supported on paired engaged Greek Doric columns, frieze ornamented with bucrania; round-

headed and keystoned doorway with pilastered jambs recessed in square-headed panel; flanking alcoves below fluted frieze and cronice. Inner bay of other elevations slightly advanced with niche (window at N) in round-headed panel.

INTERIOR: panels on E and W wall below continuous triglyph frieze (metopes originally decorated with models of human skulls - these now destroyed) marble monument against E wall dated 1824: flagstone floor, stone-vaulted ceiling.

Statement of Interest

Drawings in Soane Museum show a shallower dome. Upgrade B to A 12.7.88.
