Description

Quadrangular burial ground containing 17th-20th century stone
monuments, some elaborately carved; also site of Carruthers
Church; enclosure extended to W circa 1910. All walls built
of coursed rubble; stile and plain iron gate on W wall; S
gatepier is a re-used ornamented medieval, slab damaged by
bolt-holes and upper part cut to wall height.

RCAHM, INVENTORY, 1920 notes 3 early stones.

Commemorated in Hugh MacDiarmid's "Crowdieknowe".

Carruthers parish united with Middlebie 1609.

Conditions of burial ground extension in SRO HR 421/4 (dated

12.4.1910).
