Description

Built 1592. Ruins of simple rectangular church. E gable
remains nearly complete with small bellcote inscribed
"Lausdeo 1636", side walls have been lowered and
consolidated, with sandstone coping in 19th century. Rubble
walling with sandstone or gritstone chamfered margins.
2 resited corbels with leaf carving to E gable.
Within the old church is a 19th century memorial marking the
grave of James Clerk Maxwell physicist, died 1879.

Statement of Interest

The carved oak hexagonal pulpit of the old church dated 1598

is preserved in the National Museum of Antiquities in

Edinburgh. B Group with Parton Parish Church.
