Description

Earlier 19th century steading, replacing earlier buildings.
Squared and snecked red sandstone, some stugged, some
rubble, some ashlar dressings. S range follows falling
ground, with swept hayloft opening breaking eaves;
louvred ventilators, and former doors blocked; machinery
door slapping to W gable end. Cattle courts to E;
segmental archways into byres and sturdy square,
pyramid capped gatepiers to each court. Largely blank
elevations to N and E. Sliding doors to feeding hatches;
unusual timber divisions to troughs; timber beams on
corbels in characteristic East Lothian manner.
STALK: threshing mill to W with later red brick circular
section stalk on tall pedestal.
CARTSHEDS: 2-bay gabled cartshed and granary to W of
steading, with segmental cart-arches to S and 2 hayloft
windows above; hayloft windows in gable ends. 3-bay
earlier cartshed and granary to S, across road, with
gabled bothy adjoined to E gable. 3 segmental
cart-arches to N elevation with cut down window above
centre arch and windows above outer bays; stone
forestair to doorway on W gable; similar hayloft openings
to S side, with modern lean-to addition at ground.
Gable-end stack to bothy, with 2 doorways, 1 window and
later machinery door to S elevation; louvred ventilator.
Single storey cartshed range to W, Pantiles to cattle court
ranges and single storey cartshed; corrugated asbestos to
cart and granary blocks, modern roofing to threshing
mill.

Important steading of early Improvement period retaining

distinctive and noteworthy details. Cottages and farmhouse

nearby, not included in current listing.
