Description

1856. David Bryce. Scots Baronial mansion. Corbie-step-gabled. Square tower with corbelled and crenellated parapet; aediculed window, stepped stringcourse and knotted rope motif to entrance front. Round tower with conical roof. Original interiors, massive Jacobean staircase in entrance hall etc. S front more Jacobean. Fine balustraded parapets down to gardens. Terraced gardens attributed to Sir Robert Lorimer.

Statement of Interest

Originally a seat of Campbells of Possil, (Lanarkshire) and called Achnacroish House. Acquired by Arbuthnot C Guthrie 1870 and name changed to Duart House (and in 1911 to Torosay Castle when Murray Guthrie sold Duart Castle to Sir Fitzroy Maclean).
