Description

1888. Tapering square-plan memorial column; stepped plinth; cushion capital; small cuboid finial. Harl-pointed squared and roughly coursed rubble; pointed-arched inscribed granite plaque to S face.

Statement of Interest

Erected in 1888 by public subscription on the lands of Steven Bichan, Denwick. Commemorates the wreck of The Crown, which was carrying up to 250 Covenanters. In 1679, prisoners taken at the Battle of Bothwell Bridge were held in Greyfriars Churchyard in Edinburgh. They were put on board a ship bound for the plantations in America but it was wrecked in stormy seas off Scarva Taing on 10th December, 1679: not more than 50 prisoners escaped death.
