Description

Dated 1937. 2-storey, 3-bay, T-plan Arts and Crafts house. Cream-painted harl with ashlar margins and dressings. Base course; string course; battered cills.

SW (PRINCIPAL-GARDEN) ELEVATION; 5 symmetrical bays, grouped 1-3-1. 4-light, multi-paned casement windows in bays flanking centre bays, now obscured by modern, flat-roofed aluminium conservatory. Windows symmetrically dispoed at 1st floor, tripartite casements to outer bays, 3, bipartite windows at centre. Swept dormers symmetrically disposed at centre; stack to right.

NW (ENTRANCE) ELEVATION: 3-bay main block linked to garage by single storey link-block. Entrance at re-entrant angle under pitched porch on timber post; thatched roof with tripartite swept dormer, small stack to left. Multi-paned door, window to left. Windows to outer left bay symmetrically disposed; window at ground of left return. Link-block with half-glazed door flanked by windows; enclosed forecourt. Garage block to outer left, 2-leaf boarded door; tripartite window to left return. Wing to right of porch; advanced chimney at centre, datestone 1837, thatched at base of stack; narrow window flanking at 1st floor. 4-light window at ground and tripartite at 1st floor to right return.

SE ELEVATION: 3 bays, block to outer left advanced, quadripartite window at ground; triparite at 1st floor. Recessed 2-bay wing to right, bipartite window at left, quadripartite to outer right at ground. Tripartite window to outer left (grouped 1-2-1), bipartite to outer right at 1st floor. Tall stack to outer right. Garage block to outer right with flat-roofed extension. Multi-paned metal casement windows. Thatched roof; harled and coped ridge and wallhead stacks with moulded, brick pierced cans.

INTERIOR: timber beamed ceilings to principal rooms; flush panelled doors.

GATEWAY: lych-gate type; thatched canopy on timber posts; 2-leaf curved wooden gates.

Statement of Interest

The house is a pleasing survival of the English Arts and Crafts style, which is unusual in a building of the 1930s. Ardlarich is contemporary with parallel work by Oliver Hill and D P Hepworth in Scotland.
