Description

Earlier 19th century with later 19th century additions. 2-storey,

asymmetrical, rambling-plan villa set on raised plateau. Cream harl with sandstone margins and dressings. Chamfered reveals. Strip quoins; eaves band; base course, band course. Windows directly under eaves; projecting eaves bracketted eaves.

W ELEVATION: advanced 3-bay main block with higher block at rear. Timber conservatory porch at centre on high masonry base; elaborate wrought-iron balcony above. Stone steps to entrance at left return; decorative cast- iron balusters; door glazed with timber lower panels flanked by side lights; glazed canopy over door on decorative cast-iron brackets. 6-paned to W, coloured patterned glass in upper glass. Timber bow window to outer right bay at ground, single window to outer left. Windows symmetrically disposed at 1st floor.

N ELEVATION: advanced single bay to outer left with full-height bay window, tall window at 1st floor at right return. Lower 2-bay symmetrical block to right with late 19th century lean-to timber conservatory on harled base in re-entrant angle; stone steps to glazed door at right return, timber balusters, coloured leaded upper panes; 6-panes to N.

S ELEVATION: raised area accessed by stone steps with modern cast-iron work, divided by walls and modern plantings. Tall block to outer right, 5 varied openings at ground; 2 windows at 1st floor, tall sandstone tripartite window to outer right with single window in penultimate bay, sandstone blank escutcehon above. Lower 2 bay block to left, windows symmetrically disposed at 1st floor, modern door at ground inner bay.

4-pane and plate glass sash and case windows; uPVC windows for 1st floor of main elevation. Grey slate piend and platform roof with lead flashings. 3-grouped, coped octagonal wallhead stacks each with single, octagonal can.

WINTER GARDEN: rectangular-plan, cement-rendered block to S against boundary wall. Canted 4-light window at centre facing W with projecting flat-roofed eaves. Gabled Gothic timber feature raised at centre of flat-roof. Round-headed, Y-traceried window with detailed painted glass at centre with and flanking small lights; lit on all sides by small painted glass panels.

BALUSTRADED PARAPET: curved honey-coloured sandstone parapet directly in front of main elevation. Squat balusters on base with slab coping terminated by corniced dies with urns.

Statement of Interest

Listed as categoray B for the interest of the ironwork balustrade and winter garden. Cragmore is shown on the 1st edition map as a rectangular-plan house with bay advanced to S so the house has been extended in the later part of the century. The winter garden is not shown on the 1865 map.
