Description

Probably W J Walker Todd, circa 1920. 2 semi-detached identical pairs of local authority housing in Garden Suburb vein, forming distinctive group along thoroughfare. Single storey and attic. Harled, red tiles. S elevation: 6-bay. Advanced, 4-bay M-gable at centre with high valley; window to each floor in centre bays and doorways under swept eaves flanking; bracketted shelf canopies. Recessed outer bays with single windows, under higher eaves line intercepted by centre bay. E and W elevations: asymmetrical each with projecting stack at

centre, tiled off-sets; attic window above to S. N elevations: 6 symmetrical bays. Door to centre bays with bathroom windows at 1st floor above; regular windows in flanking bays at each floor. 12-pane glazing pattern in sash and case windows retained. Coped end stacks.

Statement of Interest

Design became a standard pattern for local authority housing immediately after World War One; similar houses at Fidra Avenue, Dirleton, for example, (listed separately), Longniddry, Macmerry and East Saltoun.

The park view houses are important for their appropriate "villagey" appearance in the context of Pencaitland, and for their retention of original details.
