Description

Earlier-mid 19th century. Rectangular-plan, 7-bay cartshed and granary attached to partly demolished steading of different periods at N. Snecked rubble sandstone with picked ashlar dressings, corrugated asbestos roof, some timber doors.

W ELEVATION: 7 segmental-arched cart-arches, 2 at left and 1 at right with boarded doors, 7 boarded windows above, 6-pane window at far left; 3 ridge ventilators.

S GABLE: 6-pane top-hopper window at ground floor, boarded hayloft door above.

E ELEVATION: mostly masked by later lean-to cattle court; large implement entrance at far right breaking through wallhead, corrugated metal doors and slate piended roof.

INTERIOR: central joist supported by rough-hewn timber columns; granary has corrugated metal partitions and plain collar- and tie-beam roof.

Statement of Interest

Westhall is shown on Edward?s 1678 map; the 1858 OS map shown an extensive steading at Westhall, of which approximately one half remains. This cartshed and granary is probably contemporary with the farmhouse (listed separately), and with it forms a significant feature in the landscape.
