Description

Mid 18th century. 2-storey, square-plan classically detailed tower. Pink rubble sandstone with large irregular re-used quoins, some tooled and moulded; traces of harling. Cavetto moulded wallhead course; collapsed (probably pyramidal) slate roof, now flat corruagted metal.

S ELEVATION: full-width, segmental arch with irregular voussoirs, rubble infil with margined door at centre; tall round-headed unglazed window with slightly raised margins at 1st floor.

E ELEVATION: blocked door at right; arrow slit ventilator at 1st floor.

W ELEVATION: arrow slit ventilator at 1st floor.

N ELEVATION: full-width, segmental arch with regular ashlar voussoirs, rubble infil with margined door at left. Circular margined window (blinded) at 1st floor.

INTERIOR: floor collpased; fireplace in SW angle at 1st floor.

Statement of Interest

The precise date and purpose of this building has not been ascertained, but ot may be part of the original castle or steading buildings incorporated into the offices of the new, circa 1785, farmhouse. It has the appearance of a classical pavilion. There wer formerly single storey buildings adjoining the east and west elevations.
