Description

Earlier to mid 18th century. 2-storey, 3-bay farmhouse with single storey, later outbuildings adjoined. Whinstone rubble, formerly harled, and squared for margins; cement repairs. 2 roll-moulded 1st floor window surrounds to rear. S (ENTRANCE) ELEVATION: door off-centre to right with window above and to each floor in flanking bays; boarded 2-leaf door. Leter 18th century heraldic panel (former gravestone9 set at 1st floor centre, between door bay and outer bay to left, with arms of Earls of Galloway and Latin inscription. Former crenellated porch removed 1979.

N (REAR) ELEVATION: bays asymmetrically disposes; door off-centre to right with 2 windows flanking at ground to left, 1 to right; 2 roll-moulded 1st floor windows above. W gable with window at ground. E gable adjoined by later whinstone rubble gabled outbuildings, extending E. W GABLE: 12-pane window to ground floor left. New 12-pane sash and case to S elevation; 12-pane deep-set sash and case at rear. Modern skylights (1989) in grey slate roof re-roofed (1979) using original slates. Broad end stacks with thackstanes. Ashlar coped skews with masque and head carvings to skewputts at front, flower and fruit to rear. INTERIOR: winding timber stair.

Statement of Interest

Former inn. Sited to E of ruins of Penningham former parish church, and graveyard containing gravestones of early date and considerable interest. The Galloway panel on the Clachan, was allegedly taken from this graveyard, however, present occupier (1992) considers this unlikely as it was not a burial site for the Earls of Galloway.
