Description

Later 19th century. Single storey and attic, 3-bay, rectangular-plan cottage. Rubble with polished sandstone dressings and margins. Projecting eaves, exposed rafters.

E ELEVATION: door at centre, 4-panelled with plate glass fanlight, small gabled dormer directly above. Flanking bays to right and left, biparitite at ground and bipartite, gabled dormerheads above.

S ELEVATION: gable with window at gablehead; lower, half-piend roofed projection off-centre to left, door to left, window on right return.

W ELEVATION: 3 bay, door at centre, flanking windows; gabled dormerheads, roof-light at centre.

2-pane sash and case windows; replacement uPVC windows at ground of main elevation. Grey slate roof; sandstone corniced apex stacks, octagonal cans.

INTERIOR: not seen 1993.

GATEPIERS AND BOUNDARY WALL: ashlar piers with moulded domed caps. Low rubble wall with semicircular coping. Simple iron gate with decorative finials.

Statement of Interest

Gare Cottage is shown on the 2nd edition map of Rhu. It is a good example of the particular cottage/villa housing in the village (along with its neighbour, The Anchorage) and holds a prominent site on Cumberland Road. The single storey, 2-bay block comprising The Nest is not listed.
