Description

Early to earlier 19th century core reworked in early 20th century with additions and alterations. 2-storey, 4-bay, near-symmetrical, rectangular-plan inn. White- painted harl. Art Nouveau glazing; decorative, scrolled cast-iron window-guards. Timber eaves.

S ELEVATION: bipartite window at ground outer left, stone mullion. Tripartite door to right, 2-leaf panelled outer door, narrow stained glass sidelights. Tripartite, segmental-headed panelled inner door, glazed upper portion, leaded frosted glass for main door; narrow sidelights with stained glass floral motif. Gently bowed oriel above interrupting eaves; 4 plate glass panes, timber mullions. 2-bay symmetrical block at centre. Narrow window and door at ground; cantilvered timber canopy and sign extends over door; 2-leaf narrow door; narrow panelled inner door, leaded and stained glass. 2 windows symmetrically disposed at 1st floor; truncated stack at centre. Shop window to ground outer right; plate glass with stained glass upper details; door recessed to right. Gently bowed oriel above; 4 panes,

tripartite upper panes, plate glass lower.

Leaded glass with opaque Art Nouveau stained glass; bipartite and tripartite upper panes, plate glass lower, sash and case windows. Green slate with some purple slate; ashlar ridge; ashlar coping to skews. Small harled, coped apex stack at left gable; broad sandstone, corniced stack to right gable, truncated wallhead stack at centre of W elevation.

INTERIOR: some original early 20th century doors, panelling and fittings.

Statement of Interest

The inn is marked on the 1st edition map and is shown as the Colquhoun Arms Hotel on the 2nd edition map. It is listed category B in consideration of the stained glass which is Favrille glass patented by Tiffany in 1893. The adjoining Row House is listed separately. Rhu Inn and Row House form the nucleus of the historic core of Rhu.
