Description

Early to earlier 19th century. 3 gatepiers, with adjoining wingwalls. Supporting railings. Red sandstone ashlar gatepiers; square-section, rounded to each face at top; each with carved heraldic shield to W face, pier to left of vehicular gateway inscribed "Pax Intrantibus" pier to right inscribed "Salus Exeuntibus". Decorative wrought-iron pedestrian and vehicular gates. Low curved wingwalls; rubble, with red sandstone saddleback coping. Surmounted by decorative iron railings, with widely-spaced balusters; fleur-de-lis detailing (parts missing).

The West Gateway is the principal entrance to the Monreith estate.
