Description

Probably by Robert Murray, 1864, on Symington, Biggar and Broughton Railway. 4-span viaduct, 3 cream skew-arched spans each of 29? sandstone masonry over Lyne Water, single wrought-iron plate girder span over minor road at W end. Masonry spans have depressed arches with polished ashlar spirally cut soffits, rock-faced voussoirs and spandrels. Piers have rounded cutwaters supporting tapering semi-octagonal buttresses extending through cope to form dies for cast-iron geometric railings. Massive abutment at road end of masonry section has 3 buttresses on upstream, 2 on downstream side to allow for skew. All buttresses have blind cruciform ?arrow slits?.

Statement of Interest

Similar in construction to viaduct at Neidpath (Peebles Parish) on same railway. The wrought iron span is an early one of the type, and the railings are now rare.
