Description

Circa 1845. 2-storey, 5 and 4-bay classical corner building, formerly bank. Grey granite ashlar, rubble to rear. Base course, moulded string course, deep cornice, parapet. Deep-set round arched openings to ground with aprons below. 2 wallhead stacks to S linked by screen with blind-arched panel.

Predominantly bipartite timber sash and case windows with timber mullions.

INTERIOR: not seen (2006) but believed to be converted into flats.

Statement of Interest

Situated on a corner site, this building is a good example of a well-detailed building which follows the classical Aberdeen tradition. The deep-set round arched detailing to the ground floor and the moulded strong course give the building a restrained decoration which is particularly well suited to the granite.

The deep-set round arched windows are similar to those at 10 Exchange Street (see separate listing) which was also built originally as a bank.

The building is named on the 1st Edition Ordnance Survey Map as the National Security Savings Bank, which opened its Aberdeen branch in 1845.
