Description

Mid 19th century. 2-storey, 4-bay classical former banking hall. Grey granite ashlar. Band course, cill course. Simple moulded cornice and blocking course. Deep-set round arched openings to ground with aprons below windows. 4-panelled timber entrance door to right set in arched opening with narrow timber pilastered jambs and semi-circular fanlight above.

Plate glass timber sash and case window.

INTERIOR: original room plan largely extant (2006). Some timber dado panelling. Modern lowered ceiling may obscure earlier fabric.

Statement of Interest

10 Exchange Street is a good example of Aberdeen's classical architecture and contributes positively to the streetscape. Round-arched openings, aprons and blocking courses are all features of 19th century Aberdeen and used to enliven the otherwise simple character of the buildings.

Exchange Street and the neighbouring streets were formed in the mid nineteenth century as part of the development of this part of the city and as part of a project to clear what was felt to be unhealthy and uninhabitable houses.
