Description

Dating from the early-19th century, 47 The Green is a three-storey and attic, three-bay tenement building with a shop unit to the ground floor. It is constructed in coursed granite rubble with raised skews. The Green elevation has a central entrance door and flanking plate glass windows. The entrance door to the flats is along Martin's Lane.

The windows are predominantly 12-pane glazing in timber sash and case frames windows to the upper storeys and there are two, large, piended and canted dormer windows. The roof is covered in grey slates and there are coped gable chimneystacks.

There is a partially harled four-storey extension to the rear, added in around 1994, and which may contain some early-19th century fabric.

Statement of Interest

The building comprising 47 The Green and 2-12 Martin's Lane follows the classical Aberdeen tradition with its simple careful proportions. It is an unusual survivor in this area and it adds significantly to the streetscape of this former market place.

The Green is one of the oldest areas in Aberdeen. It was part of the original entrance way into the city of Aberdeen and became celebrated from the 16th century as an open-air market venue. The area became increasingly built up in the 19th century with rising numbers of residents, traders and industries. With the formation and building up of Union Street to the north during the 19th century, the importance of The Green diminished. It was no longer part of the entrance way into the city and the tall buildings of Union Street had rear entrances at the level of The Green and their height overshadowed the area. This building is typical of the early-19th century buildings that were established here.

In 1994 planning permission was approved conditionally by Aberdeen City Council for the demolition and rebuilding of unsafe walls (the west and south gable walls) of 41 and 43 The Green (now 47 The Green and 2-12 Martin's Lane) (Aberdeen City Council planning portal, ref. no. 932605). In the same year, planning permission was approved conditionally for the erection of 39 flats and associated car parking together with the retention and refurbishment of several properties along The Green, including numbers 41 to 49 The Green (ref. no. 940138). The building now comprises a retail unit to the ground floor (47 The Green) and six residential flats above (2-12 [even nos] Martin's Lane).
