Description

Alexander Thomson, 1923. 2-storey, 3-bay, rectangular-plan, gabled classical retail premises. Red brick with yellow sandstone ashlar margins. Base course

N (PRINCIPAL) ELEVATION: pilastered, tripartite plate glass shop front to ground. Pedimented Venetian window breaking eaves to centre. Stugged moulded architraves to flanking windows.

S (REAR) ELEVATION: not seen 2001.

E (SIDE) ELEVATION: obscured by abutting building.

W (SIDE) ELEVATION: obscured by abutting building.

Geometric patterned, fixed small-pane windows to centre bay, 6-pane timber sash and case windows. Grey slates, lead flashing. Broad coped gabled stacks.

INTERIOR: modern shop fittings to ground, upper storey not seen 2001.

Statement of Interest

Built as a chemist for W Spence and Culbert. Thomson was a junior partner in the Airdrie practice of James Thomson and Sons.
