Description

Mid 18th century with some alterations. Large classical
3-storey 5-bay town house, with basement; alterations late in
19th century, mainly enlarging of ground and 1st floor
openings. Rubble-built with ashlar dressings and rusticated
quoins. Main central doorway approached by steps with iron
handrails, and probably altered early 19th century, with
architrave and consoled pediment; recessed panelled door with
fanlight; 2nd door (altered from a window) to right (?
earlier 19th century) also approached by steps. Base course;
sash windows with 12-pane glazing pattern; eaves/lintel band;
cornice; scrolled skewputts; straight skews; single
ashlar-built end stack (thin brick-built E stack replaces
original); slate roof. 3-bay rear elevation with central
stair windows, lean-to at W.
Recessed low 2-storey W wing (No 5/7) not original, but
similarly detailed.

Statement of Interest

Purchased by the burgh council in the 1790s and became the

burgh academy; Edward Irving and Thomas Carlyle were pupils

here; converted to a dwelling house by James Little,

solicitor, one time Provost of Annan.
