Description

Early 19th century, with mid 19th century and early 20th century alterations. Single and single basement and attic, near square-plan house and cottage. Painted harl; timber eaves; strip margins. Painted margins to window openings.

NW (ENTRANCE) ELEVATION: 3-bay. Steps to gabled entrance porch to central gabled bay; 2-leaf glazed timber door; square panel to gablehead. Canted windows at ground and attic floor to bay to left; single windows at basement and ground floor to bay to right.

NE (SIDE) ELEVATION: infilled opening to single storey section to left; 4 single windows at ground (narrower window to penultimate bay to left), 2 single windows breaking eaves above, at attic.

SE (ALLOWAY) ELEVATION: 6-bay. Single and tripartite window to central advanced section; 2 single windows to recessed sections to outer right and left.

COTTAGE, SE (ALLOWAY) ELEVATION: single storey, 3-bay cottage. Central timber door; letterbox fanlight; flanking single windows; recessed lean-to, to outer right. Slate roof; pitch stacks; polygonal cans.

Predominantly 12-pane timber sash and case windows. Slate roof; ridge, wallhead and pitch stacks; circular cans. Cast-iron rainwater goods.

GARAGE, GROTTO, RAILINGS AND BOUNDARY WALL: single storey garage to S of site; slate roof; stone skews. Polygonal-plan shell grotto to S of house; timber seating; timber windows; timber door; slate roof. Boundary wall with railings atop, encloses site to Alloway. Railed stone steps lead to cottage entrance. Harled rubbleed remains of rabbit house to W of house.

INTERIORS: not seen 1999.

Statement of Interest

Of particular interest is the shell grotto. Curiously, a shell grotto is marked from the 1858 Ordnance Survey map through to the 1937 Ordnance Survey map adjacent to Brig O' Doon house (see separate list description) but no grotto is marked near the site of Doonbrae.
