Description

Later 19th century. Single storey and attic, 3-bay end of terrace cottage.

Coursed ashlar. Base course; eaves course; modillion cornice; strip quoins. Raised margins and cornices to ground floor windows.

W (ENTRANCE) ELEVATION: step to central entrance (No 1A); bracketed corniced doorpiece; timber door; letterbox fanlight; flanking sidelights; flanking single windows. Canted dormers to outer left and right at attic (finial to right only).

N (MONTGOMERIE TERRACE) ELEVATION: step to central entrance (No 1, Clyde Cottage); arched key-blocked doorpiece; timber door; letterbox fanlight; flanking single windows; single window to gablehead. Modern extension to outer left.

Plate glass timber sash and case windows (4-pane at attic). Grey slate roof; rooflights; stone skews (kneelers to Montgomerie Terrace gable); modillion corniced stack to left (no cornice to stack to right); tall circular cans (to left only).

INTERIOR: not seen 1998.

BOUNDARY WALL, GATEPIERS AND GATES: low coped boundary wall enclosing site; replacement railings; square-plan iron gatepiers to both elevations, decorative panels; pyramidal finials; decorative single-leaf iron gates. Vehicular gates to Montgomerie Terrace lead to modern garage.

Statement of Interest

A prominent corner siting, with its differing doorpieces, kneelers and retention of timber sash and case windows distinguishes No 1 and 1A from the similar adjoining cottages.
