Description

Later 19th century. 2-storey, 6-bay mirrored pair of houses on corner site. Sandstone rubble. Base course; cornice. Cill blocks and painted margins to window openings.

N (ENTRANCE) ELEVATION: steps to cavetto-splayed margined doorpieces to penultimate bays to left and right; recessed timber doors; letterbox fanlights; regular fenestration to flanking bays (central bay non-aligned). Central pedimented wallhead stack.

E (FORT STREET) ELEVATION: 3-bay, with recessed bay to outer left. Regular fenestration at all floors to 3-bay section (smaller window openings to central bay). Central pedimented wallhead stack. Block-pedimented doorpiece to recessed bay to outer left; 2-leaf timber door; letterbox fanlight; lower square-headed archway to right; single window aligned at 1st floor. Single windows at ground and 1st floor to outer left to re-entrant angle, smaller window to centre at 1st floor.

Predominantly lying-pane glazing; modern glazing to windows at ground to outer left and 2 windows at 1st floor to outer right of E elevation. Grey slate roof; coped wallhead and ridge stacks; circular cans

INTERIORS: not seen 1998.

Statement of Interest

A good example of later 19th century architecture leading to St John the Baptist's Tower (see separate list description). Of particular note are the cavetto-splayed doorpieces (found in the early 19th century buildings in the parallel Charlotte Street) and the substantial retention of lying-pane glazing.
