Description

HJ Blanc, circa 1883. 2-storey (with dormer heads), 4-bay, asymmetrical-plan gothic villa. Coursed, squared sandstone rubble. Bracketed timber eaves; iron finials to gables.

SE (ENTRANCE) ELEVATION: steps to L-plan single storey gabled entrance porch; 2-leaf timber door; cantilevers of bargeboards spring from colonnettes; 2-light window to right. 2-light window at ground, single window at 1st floor to penultimate bay to right; dormer head above. 5-light bowed window at ground floor; detailed cornice; 3-light window above at 1st floor; segmental carved tympanum over; trefoil work to bargeboarded gable.

SW, NW AND NE ELEVATIONS: not seen 1999.

Plate glass timber sash and case windows. Slate roof; bracketed timber eaves; terracotta ridge detailing; battered pitch stacks; circular cans. Cast-iron rainwater goods.

INTERIOR: not seen 1999.

GATEPIERS, GATES, RAILINGS AND BOUNDARY WALL: gatepiers to entrance to right in Midton Road, decorative cope to 1 only; 2-leaf iron gate and short stretch of railings atop boundary wall to entrance on Victoria Park; low coped boundary wall enclosing site.

Statement of Interest

H J Blanc (1844-1917). Large gothic villa of complicated plan, notable for its elaborate detailing, for example the finely detailed tympanum and bargeboarding, and the columned porch.
