D MacGibbon, circa 1860. 2-storey with basement and attic, 5-bay baronial detached villa with French pavilion-roofed tower. Squared sandstone. Base course; crowstepped gables.
SE (ENTRANCE) ELEVATION: steps to gabled, arched entrance porch in penultimate bay to right; 2-leaf timber doors; shield above; bipartite window to recessed square-plan tower aligned to rear; bracketted eaves course; tall French pavilion roof; wrought-iron weather-vane. Advanced gabled bay to outer right; quadripartite window at ground floor; bipartite window at 1st floor; square panel to gablehead (lean-to adjoins, with garage to outer right). Tripartite window at basement to gabled bay to left of entrance; ground and 1st floor tripartite windows (dated apron panels to ground floor windows, trefoil heads to 1st floor windows) set within segmental arch; sculpted tympanum; single corniced window at attic with panel and decorative strapwork above. Single windows at ground and 1st floor to penultimate bay to left. Bipartite window at ground floor; single window at 1st floor to bay to outer left.
SW (BENTFIELD AVENUE) ELEVATION: 2-bay with modern addition to outer left. Tripartite windows at both bays to exposed basement; single window to bay to left at ground floor; single windows to both bays at 1st floor; attic window to gabled bay to right; modern dormer and railings to attic to left; narrow slit window to corbelled corner turret to left. Modern addition to outer left.
NW ELEVATION: not seen 1999.
NE ELEVATION: predominantly blank; window set in gable adjoining tower to right; modern addition to outer right.
Plate glass timber sash and case windows. Slate roof; nepus, gablehead and ridge coped stacks; circular cans. Cast-iron rainwater goods.
INTERIOR: not seen 1999.
BOUNDARY WALL: coped rubble boundary wall enclosing site.
The house was built for David Hunter, whose initials appear on the staircase window. Extensive modern additions to Bentfield Avenue (Seatower Court). David Walker notes the double height window with decoratively sculpted tympanum as a distinctive feature of MacGibbon's work (p397).
