Description

Mid 19th century. 2-storey and basement, detached corner-site Italianate villa. Coursed sandstone. Deep rusticated base course; band course above; 1st floor cill course; mutuled timber eaves.

E (ENTRANCE, MIDTON ROAD) ELEVATION: balustraded steps with ball-finialled piers to central loggia entrance porch; single shouldered window to left; entrance to re-entrant angle to left; 2 single windows to recessed bays; 3 single windows aligned above at 1st floor (strip pilasters delineating bays). Advanced flanking bays; openings at basement; single windows at ground floor; tripartite arched windows at 1st floor (consoled, pierced balcony to bay to left). Lower height recessed wing to outer right.

S (SIDE, RACECOURSE VIEW) ELEVATION: advanced, 4-stage tower; rusticated 1st stage; single window at 2nd and 3rd stages (consoled, pierced balcony to 3rd stage window); blind tripartite window at 4th stage. Flanking canted bays at ground floor; raised shaped panels over window heads; mutuled cornice; single windows at 1st floor.

W (SIDE) ELEVATION: 4-bay. Lower height wing to outer left. 2-leaf glazed timber door and letterbox fanlight at basement to bay to left; single windows aligned above at ground and 1st floor. 2 windows at 1st floor to recessed 2-bay section; single window at ground floor to left, single window to re-entrant angle to left; glazed timber door to re-entrant angle to right; openings at basement and ground floor to bay to right. Single windows at basement and ground floor to bay to right; oriel window at 1st floor with bracketed base and consoled cornice.

N ELEVATION: not seen 1999.

Predominantly lying-pane timber sash and case windows. Low-pitched, slate piend roof; corniced wallhead stacks; polygonal cans. Cast-iron rainwater goods.

INTERIOR: not seen 1999.

GATEPIERS AND BOUNDARY WALL: square-plan gatepiers to Racecourse View and Midton Road elevations; coped boundary wall enclosing site.

Statement of Interest

Marked as St Leonard's on Ordnance Survey map, 1858. A good later 19th century example of Italianate villa architecture with its distinctive shouldered entrance loggia and symmetrical tower elevation overlooking the former racecourse.
