Description

Early 19th century. 3-storey, 3-bay plain classical tenement with commercial premises at ground floor. Painted ashlar to entrance elevation; coursed sandstone to side (painted in part). Cornice to shopfronts; cill courses at upper floors; cornice; blocking course. Architraved window surrounds; cornices at 1st floor.

SE (ENTRANCE) ELEVATION: central entrance to shop to right; modern aluminium glazed door; letterbox fanlight; flanking shop windows. Entrance to right to shop to left; modern aluminium glazed door; letterbox fanlight; shop window to outer left. Regular fenestration at upper floors.

NE (ACADEMY STREET) ELEVATION: 2-bay. Recessed entrance to outer right; timber door; letterbox fanlight (painted); single windows aligned above at 1st and 2nd floors. Single window to centre at ground floor; smaller single windows aligned above at 1st and 2nd floors.

Shop windows at ground floor; predominantly 12-pane timber sash and case windows at upper floors Grey slate roof; stone skews; coped gablehead stacks; circular cans.

INTERIOR: not seen 1998.

Statement of Interest

Standing adjacent to Thomas Hamilton's former Ayrshire Bank (see separate list description, 34 New Bridge Street and 2, 2A Academy Street), Nos 2 and 4 Sandgate is distinguished by its detached status in the predominantly terraced Sandgate. Plaque at ground to outer left reads "Here stood the Grammar Schule till 1796".
