Description

Mid 18th century, perhaps incorporating earlier work. Substantial 3-storey L-plan range with return elevation to Battery Green; 17 bays to Castle Street (some openings blocked) with two tall round-headed keystoned arches with blocked imposts. Harled rubble, ashlar margins. Mainly 4-pane glazing in fixed timber lights in street frontage, varied elsewhere; later shop with enlarged window slapped between round-headed pend archways.

Irregular elevation to Battery Green, probably of different builds. Mainly rubble interior elevations with projecting additions and some alteration. Slate roofs.

Statement of Interest

Substantial building, probably originally a warehouse, being close to harbour. Cumberland's troops said to have been lodged in premises after the 1745 uprising. Glazed lights and windows probably replaced original shutters.
