Description

Circa 1750 with later alterations and additions. Pair square, single bay, 2-storey pavilion gate lodges flanking entrance to Banff Castle from Castle Street.

NORTH LODGE: harled, tooled ashlar dressings; shallow blind arcade to W street front with mid/later l9th century ground and lst floor windows in centre; similar fenestration in S elevation. Lodge linked to similar shaped building constructed mid-later l9th century and joined to front pavilion by narrow entrance bay. 4-pane timber sash and case glazing; later l9th century rear wallhead stacks to each pavilion; piended slate roofs.

SOUTH LODGE: slightly lower in height than North Lodge; harled, ashlar margins. Shallow round-headed arcades in both W (to Castle Street) and E elevations, at E the upper part infilled with planking above bandcourse height. Off-centre doorway in S; later off-centre window in E elevation. Piended slate roof.

GATEPIERS AND GATES: mid-later l9th century (re-instated from Duff House). Pair plain square tooled ashlar gatepiers with shallow pyramidal caps above band of billet-moulding detail. Pair cast-iron carriage gates and matching flanking pedestrian gates, the latter flanked by plain harled outer piers.

Statement of Interest

Gatepiers and gates re-used from Duff House. The south pavilion appears never to have served as a dwelling for lodge-keeper and may have been a carriage house, for which there appears no provision elsewhere. Topographical drawing of l822 (reproduced by A E Mahood) reveals no windows in N Lodge Castle Street frontage.
