Description

18th century gabled L-plan range of different heights on steeply

sloping island site with circa 1830 entrance/stair wing projecting

from re-entrant angle.

PATH HOUSE: dated 1756. 2-storey and dormerless attic house with tall E facing gable and long 4-bay elevations facing N (rear) and S.

PATH COTTAGE linked at right angles to form L-plan; single storey over raised basement cottage with entrance in long W elevation opening to Old Castlegate. In re-entrant angle projects 2-storey,symmetrical 3-bay gabled entrance bay of circa 1830-40 (style of William Robertson) linked to house and cottage by curved screen walls. All harled with painted ashlar margins. Tall narrow 2-bay E facing gable with raised basement doorway, chamfered angles to raised ground floor level (accommodating 2 arms of Water Path passing each side); paired raised ground, 1st and small attic lights. Wallhead gablet to N elevation and

l9th century canted oriel. Mainly plate glass glazing in timber sash and case windows. Corniced end and ridge stacks; slate roofs.

INTERIOR: curved staircase with decorative cast-iron balusters; mural alcove for grandfather clock in stairwell. Mid 18th century raised and fielded panelled doors, mainly 6-panel but one 2-panel door in cottage; also 1830-40 doors and house carpentry.

Statement of Interest

Path Cottage appears earlier than Path House; it faces Old Castlegate, the original route to Banff Castle. Path House initialled and dated CP EF 1756 on E gable, overlooking the steep slope to High Shore. The later entrance/stairwell caused some alteration to the internal layout of house.
