Description

Later to late 19th century. 2-storey, 5-bay flatted dwelling with shops at ground, on corner site closing irregular terrace. Polished and stugged ashlar with architraved openings; roughly coursed rubble with dressed quoins. Part base course, ground floor cornice forming 1st floor cill course, eaves cornice. Basket-arched openings to shops. Stone mullions.

S (SOUTH STREET) ELEVATION: bay to left of centre at ground with panelled timber door and blocked fanlight, bipartite window to outer left under stepped fascia board; altered round-arched recessed panel with small window to centre; penultimate bay to right with part-glazed door and fixed display window (both basket-arched) and bipartite window to outer right all under fascia board. 1st floor with 2 closely-aligned windows to centre and bipartite windows to outer bays.

SW (CORNER) ELEVATION: piend-roofed elevation with large fixed display window (blocked door?) to centre at ground, flanking full-height round-arched panels and chamfered outer angles, fascia board above and 2 windows to 1st floor flanking relief carved shield; wallhead stack to centre above.

N (NORTH STREET) ELEVATION: 3 ashlar bays to right and 2 angled rubble bays to left. Bays to right with corniced and consoled, deep-set panelled timber door and deep plate glass fanlight to centre, large basket-arched 3-part fixed display window to right and bipartite window with panelled aprons to left; 1st floor with single window to centre and flanking bipartites. Chamfered angle corbelled to square at 1st floor to left of centre giving way to slightly set-back angled bays with single window to outer left at ground and 2 windows to 1st floor flanking dominant shouldered wallhead stack.

Plate glass glazing in replacement timber sash and case windows. Grey slates. Coped ashlar stacks with cans; rubble stack to N. Cast-iron downpipes with decorative rainwater hoppers.

Statement of Interest

Well-detailed commercial tenement making dignified contribution to townscape.
