Description

Later 19th century. Former municipal Beach Tearoom. Single storey and attic, T-plan building with platform roof and single storey wing. Prominent decorative cast-iron verandah. Polychromatic brick with brick dressings, dressed ashlar, moulded cills, stone mullions and stop-chamfered arrises.

S (PRINCIPAL) ELEVATION: piend-roofed 4-bay canopy with spiral motif balustrade on low base, narrow circular columns with foliate capitals giving way to filigree spandrel brackets below timbered canopy with moulded brackets and eaves cornice (2 bay to E and W) clasping single storey T-projection with centre bipartite window and flanking adjacent windows, window and part-glazed door with 6-pane fanlight on returns to right and left, window in recess to right and left: outer left wing, boarded door with letterbox fanlight to outer right, 2 windows to left, further boarded door with letterbox fanlight in penultimate bay to left and window to outer left; 3 modern rooflights above.

E ELEVATION: verandah to left (see above). Advanced section to right with window to right and canted window with cornice to left, bipartite window at centre above in gable.

W ELEVATION: verandah to right (see above). Pitch-roofed wing at ground, bipartite window above slightly to right of centre in gable altered to flat roof at left.

4- and 6-pane glazing pattern in upper sashes with plate glass lower sashes to main building, plate glass glazing also in sash and case windows to wing. Grey slates with remains of lettering(?) to W. Cavetto coped brick stacks with cans; plain bargeboarding with moulded, exposed eaves; cast-iron downpipes with decorative rainwater hoppers.

OUTBUILDING: abutting E boundary wall. Flat-roofed, single storey building (former public toilets) painted brick with red brick dressings to S and W; rubble with damaged harl to E, adjoining boundary wall. Door with cast-iron gate to S, leading to interior with glazed tiles; 2 brick-vented openings to W; 2 timber-louvred openings to E.

GATEPIERS, RAILINGS AND BOUNDARY WALLS: ashlar gatepiers to E with chamfered plinths and pyramidal caps with ball finials; similar gatepiers to W but finials missing. Low, crenellated, rendered boundary walls to S with square coped pier and moulded corner section to SE. Low crenellated, painted and rendered wall with cast-iron railings and gates adjoining building at SE. Boundary walls of coped rubble to E and W, and of brick to N.

Listed Cat B particularly in consideration of fine ironwork.
