Description

Early 19th century. Single storey, 7-bay cottage with small additions to N now subdivided; broad, advanced and taller outer bays. Squared and snecked whinstone (some patches of Aberdeen bond) with dressed ashlar quoins, harled to S; chamfered arrises.

W (ENTRANCE) ELEVATION: curving flight of 10 steps lead to boarded door with plate glass fanlight at centre of left pavilion, windows in flanking bays; recessed centre section with blinded centre door and windows in flanking bays; right pavilion with centre window.

S ELEVATION: step up to tiled area with shallow verandah formed by 2 slender cast-iron columns on semicircular plinth beneath swept roof of projecting roofline; deep-set panelled door in architraved surround with almost full-height windows in flanking bays.

E ELEVATION: outer bay to right with 2 modern windows and modern extension to outer right; recessed centre section with glazed door to right and 3 small windows to left, door to left; outer left bay blind.

12-pane glazing pattern in sash and case windows to S and W, 6-pane and plate glass glazing in casement windows to E. Graded grey slates. Paired ashlar stacks with moulded coping and plinth.

BOUNDARY WALLS: coped rubble boundary walls.

Statement of Interest

Seaside Cottage was originally Bath Cottage, a salt water bathing house with slate slabs forming the sides of the individual baths. The steps to W have slate treads saved from the original baths.
